Frequently asked questions.

What is the main focus of REHEATZ?

Our goal is to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of food production in Zambia by identifying opportunities to recycle waste heat found in wastewater.

What can you do with the recovered heat?

The application of recovered heat depends on the site's specific needs. At our pilot plant, we use recovered heat to preheat water for the boiler, significantly reducing coal consumption for steam production. Other potential applications include preheating water for handwashing or employee showers or reintegrating it into production.

Is Wastewater Heat Recovery (WWHR) only for fossil fuel users?

No! WWHR recycles the thermal energy from hot wastewater – it doesn’t matter how the water is heated.

Is WWHR still effective at small companies and farms?

Aspects of WWHR can certainly be introduced at organisations of all sizes. Right now, we’re focusing our partnerships on larger manufacturers, but we aim to collaborate with the Ministry of Green Economy and the Environment to expand WWHR technology access to smaller companies and farms in Zambia.

What social impacts will REHEAT have in Zambia?

We’re partnering with Build-It International, a nonprofit that empowers women and youth in Zambia through skills training. We'll create a renewable energy construction course using our site as a training platform. This initiative promotes sustainable energy and supports UN SDGs related to gender equality, decent work and economic growth, quality education, and poverty alleviation. You can learn more about Build-It and the work they do here.
